TL;DR: A styling cream for wavy and curly hair that smooths, defines, and conditions waves and curls
It's hard to decide which part of my curly hair-care routine is most important. You can't have poppin' curls without a solid base, so shampoo, conditioners, and deep treatments are a must. But those three alone cannot guarantee that I'll have a head full of tight, defined coils that will fluff out further to the heavens as the days go by. That's why a curl-defining styler like Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream is so important to me — a good one can really make or break my hair-care routine for the week.
While I love the softness and frizz of third-day hair, I don't want all that on the first day. There are tons of brands that make products just for curls, but because curl patterns can vary, you can't just pick up any old definer and assume it will be right for your texture. If you have finer curls, thick creams might weigh them down. If you have kinky curls, some products just simply don't have the hold you need if you're trying to define your texture. As someone who is in the middle, with tight coils, kinks, and slightly looser curls all on the same head, the best definers for me have a "slim-thick" consistency. And by that I mean, you can tell they're creamy and moisturizing in your hand and when you apply it in your hair, but they're not so thick that they weigh down my curls or cause buildup.

You could classify Moroccanoil's Curl Defining cream as just that. The moment I pumped some of the product in my hand, I knew it was going to be smooth sailing from there. It definitely has some thickness, the kind that instantly clumps those wet or damp curls together. I had to be careful, actually, not to use a ton because I felt the product was so substantial. I raked this into my already co-washed hair, did minimal styling, and then let it air-dry as I made my way to work. When I got in the office, I rubbed some oil onto my hands and lightly scrunched and smoothed it into my strands. (I'm currently using this one a lot.) My hair was clumped like crazy (crazy good). The product is so moisturizing that it definitely caused me a fair share of shrinkage. So much so, that people asked me if I'd cut my hair (I did, but when it shrunk, it looked like I'd cut off a lot more than I actually had.)
For me, the real test of a curl cream is if it can keep your hair defined as the days go by, while also fluffing out to its former, voluminous glory. This one did just that. Three days later, and I've still got plenty of coils still intact amongst the fluffier, softer, slightly frizzy texture that comes as the days passed. It still looks good, in the kind of carefree, undone-but-still-finessed way I love.
As we know, Moroccanoil is a little bougie — one bottle of this stuff will set you back $34. But if you like nice things, love the Moroccanoil smell, or a little bit of both, there's a good chance you'll be into this.
