This shampoo will keep blonde hair looking amazing between salon visits

If you have bleached hair, you'll know it's often quite high maintenance, requiring regular salon trips to keep roots in check, a moisturising product to help prevent dryness and, most importantly, an anti-brass shampoo to keep the colour looking its best.

Tricky in the current climate, so we could do with a helping hand to keep our highlights looking salon-fresh for longer.

Luckily, toning shampoos do just that. They are typically blue or purple in colour and work to neutralise the yellow or more orangey tones that can arise.

And the Good Housekeeping Institute, our go-to for consumer testing, has rounded up their 10 best anti-brass shampoos for blondes and, if you're concerned about sulphates in your beauty products, you might be interested to know that Beauty Works' anti-yellow shampoo has come in as the highest-scoring sulphate-free option.

What are sulphates?

Like most shampoos, the majority of anti-brass options have sulphates like sodium laureth sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) in their ingredients list. These are surfactants used in personal care products like shampoos, toothpastes and shower gels to remove grease and create a lathering effect.

In recent years, however, these chemicals have developed a bit of a bad reputation. While the science says that sulphates are completely safe to use, they are made from petroleum, which is a non-renewable source – so they don't have the best environmental credentials.

What's more, the lathering effect we all know and love is actually unnecessary, as it doesn't impact on how well the product works.

As a result, a lot of brands now offer a range of health and beauty products that don't use these chemicals.

Going back to the winning Beauty Works product, this sulphate free purple shampoo earned an impressive score of 81/100. It's £12.59 for a 200ml bottle and it has a sweet fruity scent. Sunflower extract and vitamin F also work to leave the hair feeling stronger and healthier.

You only have to use the shampoo for two minutes to see effects (any longer and you may experience purple staining) and the majority of testers saw improvements in their hair's colour in just a single wash.

Testers were impressed with how it drew out the complex variety of blonde tones in their hair, making their tresses more vibrant while reducing brassy tones. This neutralisation effect was particularly evident in cooler blonde and silvery shades – making it a good choice for grey hair too.

Best sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners: top 10 combinations that are gentler on your hair

Sulphates found in shampoos and conditioners are responsible for creating that foamy lather you see when washing your hair, and also remove dirt and excess oil to leave your locks feeling squeaky clean.

But while they are effective at cleaning, sulphates can also leave your hair feeling dry and irritate your scalp, especially if you have sensitive skin. A sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner provides a gentler approach to hair washing, so your locks are left looking and feeling clean, without any unnecessary damage.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute put sulphate-free shampoos and conditioners through their paces to find out which combinations give the best results. We also spoke to Katie Allan, founder of boutique London hair salon MAYFIVE, to bring you the ultimate guide on sulphate-free hair care.

Should I use a sulphate-free shampoo?

A good sulphate-free shampoo will leave your hair feeling clean and conditioned without weighing it down or leaving it looking too wispy. Katie explains that it's 'great for clients with coloured hair to avoid it fading in between services, and also for hair that is naturally drier (like curly hair). They aren't as abrasive and will cleanse hair without ruffling cuticles unnecessarily. Shampoos that are heavy in sulphates can result in colour fade and frizzy hair.'

Katie also advises that people with severe scalp conditions, such as dandruff, use a product containing sulphates until the condition clears. You can then move on to something more gentle afterwards.

Katie's top tip: Wet the hair thoroughly and apply a small amount of shampoo into your palms. Rub together in your hands first to create a lather and then apply directly to the roots and massage through. If you feel like it isn't lathering, just add a bit more water.

What is the best sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner?

Will my hair still be clean after washing with a sulphate-free shampoo?

Yes, it will still effectively wash away your daily grime and build up. You may notice that sulphate-free shampoos have a lower foam and lather due to the alternative cleansing agents used, but this doesn't affect performance.

GHI tip: Do a double wash to ensure your hair is fully cleansed of dirt and residue. Lather, rinse, repeat! It has the added bonus of creating more of that foamy goodness we love.

How the GHI tests sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner

Over 300 testers lathered and rinsed their way through 24 sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner brands. They helped to assess how easy each one was to apply and distribute across hair, how well they lathered (if applicable) and washed out, and how hair felt and looked after drying.

In the lab, the GHI experts used a machine called the Dia-Stron to measure how easily a comb went through hair strands after washing them with each shampoo and conditioner.

Here are the ones that performed the best on test.

Here’s Why You Should Switch to a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

Bestproducts.com Logo By Ashley Phillips, Jennifer Hussein of Bestproducts.com | Slide 1 of 14: You wouldn't wash your hair with dish or laundry detergent, right? Then you might want to know about sulfates. This ingredient that lathers up your go-to shampoo is actually an aggressive foaming agent — aka detergent — which can be extremely harmful to your hair, and even the environment. We spoke to the experts and got the scoop on why it’s best to stay in a sulfate-free zone when it comes to shampoo. For one, sulfates derived from petroleum “are associated with climate change, pollution, and greenhouse gases,” while sulfates derived from palm or coconut oils "are a concern because of the destruction to the rainforest and tree plantations," according to Kérastase consulting hairstylist Ryan Richman. Also, Richman notes that "sulfates being washed down the drain by millions of users can negatively affect aquatic animals and pollute the environment.” "Sulfates are used to create a lather in the hair to remove oil and dirt, but they can also cause colored hair to fade," adds Dhiran Mistry, hairstylist at the David Mallett salon in NY. Richman and Mistry also note that sulfates can actually lead to frizz, causing more hairy situations in your future. Who knew washing your hair could cause so much damage? Another reason to avoid this ingredient is the irritation it can cause to your skin, and your overall hair health. Richman says this is especially true for those with rosacea, eczema, and contact dermatitis, because “when you rinse the shampoo from your hair, it runs down your body and can cause redness, itchiness, or hives.” "Sulfates can also cause irritation due to the chemicals used to make them, so using a sulfate-free shampoo can help prevent a dry itchy scalp," adds Mistry. So, it’s pretty safe to say that washing up with sulfates isn't doing you any favors! Instead, listen to the pros and make the switch to a safer, sulfate-free shampoo alternative. Here are our current favorite picks.

The 5 Best Conditioners For Frizzy Hair

If you're looking to make your frizzy hair a bit smoother, the best conditioners for frizzy hair are great tools to add to your arsenal. It's generally recommended that you always use a conditioner if you wash your hair with shampoo, but which conditioner is best will vary depending on your hair type and goals. A conditioner that provides moisture and smoothes strands is an absolute must if you want to tame frizz, which is caused by damage or disruption to the cuticle, which is the exterior protective layer of a strand of hair. This includes damage that can occur from dryness, heat damage, or shampoos that contain sulfates, which tend to dry out hair, as well as a disruption of the cuticle as a result of humidity.

There are two main types of conditioners that can help to create a sleeker 'do: traditional conditioners and leave-in conditioners. Traditional conditioners are applied to wet hair after shampooing, typically in the bath or shower, then rinsed out. They contain ingredients like oils, polymers, and proteins that penetrate, moisturize, strengthen, and/or smooth out the cuticle. For maximum effectiveness, it's important to wait a couple of minutes between application and rinsing.

On the other hand, leave-in conditioners are applied to damp hair after shampooing and don't need to be rinsed out, allowing the product more time to penetrate the cuticle and protect the hair. They are typically used as a replacement for traditional conditioners (although if you have extra-dry hair and want to try using both traditional and leave-in conditioners for added moisture, you certainly can), and should be combed into or sprayed on your hair, depending on the individual product.

Frizz-fighting conditioners are formulated for dry, damaged hair, so it's important to note that they can feel heavier than other conditioners, largely due to the fact that they often contain more oils and polymers that coat each individual strand to provide protection and hydration. This should pose no problem if you have thick or curly hair — just opt for a conditioner that's creamier in consistency and loaded with oils. However, if your hair is fine or prone to greasiness, a leave-in conditioning spray is a better option for adding moisture and shine without weighing it down.

From lightweight sprays to creamy moisturizers, here are the best conditioners for anyone looking to smooth frizzy hair. (And don't forget to pair your conditioner with one of the best shampoos for frizzy hair!)

I started using a clarifying shampoo and couldn't believe what happened to my hair

Don't get me wrong, I haven't got anything against regular shampoo. For day-to-day cleansing, finding one suited to your hair type and texture can make a huge difference to the health and appearance of your hair. Especially given the options now are more specific and targeted – you can pick up solutions catered solely toward frizzy or fine strands, and there are even ones to soothe an itchy scalp.

But if you find your hair is starting to suffer from build-up (styling products can contribute massively), it might be time to invest in a once-a-month (or week) clarifying shampoo. Their purpose – to remove every trace of product and oil.

This is no sponge and bucket clean, this is the car valet of cleanses. A clarifying shampoo will get deep into roots and work itself all the way along the hair shaft, lifting away each and every speck of dirt as it goes. Given its mightier cleansing power, it has the ability to take on even the most stubborn, adhesive styling products that build up over time when our everyday shampoos struggle to shift them.

I recently added one to my routine and while it took me a while to start seeing the benefits, I can tell you now that my blonde is brighter, I'm not experiencing as much breakage and my scalp doesn't get as oily as quickly.

While it's not a good idea to deep-clean your hair with a clarifying shampoo every time you wash it (since clarifying shampoos have harsher ingredients, which, if used too regularly can dry hair and scalps out), a once over every so often could just be the answer to peak hair health.

Here's our edit of the best clarifying and deep cleansing shampoos:
