The best dry shampoos, according to celebrity hairstylists

If a hair routine that takes longer than 10 minutes seems too tedious for you, let us introduce you to our favorite beauty secret weapon: dry shampoo.

A lifesaver in the morning or after the gym, you can use dry shampoo anytime your hair feels greasy or when you want to add texture to your strands, explains Adir Abergel, hairstylist to Saoirse Ronan, Anne Hathaway and Kirsten Dunst. "Dry shampoo works wonderfully on bangs that need a refresh, on anything that has gotten a little flat, after the gym and in between blowouts," he says.

Though it's one of the most life-changing beauty products we have, it can be hard to find the right dry shampoo for you and your hair type. To help, we asked Abergel, along with the hairstylists to celebs like Mariah Carey, Priyanka Chopra and Gabrielle Union, to reveal their all-time favorite dry shampoos that they keep on hand in their professional kits.

Ahead are 18 of our favorite dry shampoos to ensure you have a good hair day, no matter how little styling time you have to spare. They range from a drugstore option that costs less than $7, to a luxe find that received major snaps from three hairstylists, with one promising it "will visibly clean your locks."

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo ($25; amazon.com)

Carla Gentry Osorio, the hairstylist to Kerry Washington and Jada Pinkett Smith, is a fan of Amika Dry Shampoo, a talc-free option to absorb oils. "It doesn't leave a white residue and is free of sulfates, parabens and phthalates," she says. "It's safe for color-treated, Brazilian-treated and keratin-treated hair."

_______________________________________________________________________________

DPHue Apple Cider Vinegar Dry Shampoo ($23; ulta.com)

"DPHue Apple Cider Vinegar Dry Shampoo is amazing because your scalp is actually getting cleansed as the powder absorbs the oil," says Larry Sims, hairstylist to Gabrielle Union, Zendaya and Danai Gurira. Apple cider vinegar has antimicrobial properties, and the lavender extract found in this formula helps to soothe your tired scalp.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Lafe's Dry Shampoo ($7.75; amazon.com)

"Lafe's Dry Shampoo in black is environmentally safe with organic ingredients from the Earth that enhance the shine and health of your hair while absorbing unwanted dirt and oil," explains Sims. Whether you're a blonde, brunette or redhead or have raven locks, the brand's got you covered with options that blend in with your hair color.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo ($26; sephora.com)

"Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo is great because it comes in different tones, and it doesn't leave white residue on your hair, and it doesn't dry it out," says Sims. Zateesha Barbour, hairstylist to singer Jorja Smith, likes to use the light tones option on blond hair. "It has a very subtle violet tone to revitalize the appearance of dull blond hair, UV protection, and is infused with argan oil for a silky finish," she says.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair Dry Cleaning Spray ($33.22; amazon.com)

"I love this product because it is amazingly light and airy, especially for darker colored hair, because it doesn't leave a chalky veil," says Barbour. "I love the fresh citrus fragrance, and it's cruelty-free as well." Throw this dry shampoo into your gym bag to help make your post-workout routine a breeze.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Paul Mitchell Dry Wash Shampoo ($22; amazon.com)

"The superfine mist and velvet finish makes this product a dream to use," says Barbour. "A little goes a long way; you can blast through the length of your hair as well as the roots to revive your blow-dry." The colorless formula won't leave behind pesky white flakes, and it's easy to brush through your hair.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Virtue Refresh Dry Shampoo ($32; sephora.com)

"It's incredibly lightweight, it doesn't leave a residue on dark hair, and it absorbs oil better than any other dry shampoo I've experienced," says Abergel, who is also creative director at Virtue Labs. "Also, the scent is super clean and fresh and it smells amazing." The vegan dry shampoo contains tapioca starch to absorb excess oil, while kaolin clay can help keep hair clean.

Pro tip: If you have oily hair, mist your dry shampoo onto your strands before you curl your hair, says Abergel. If you prefer an effortlessly cool look, then apply the dry shampoo after you curl your hair.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk ($20; sephora.com)

"I rely on dry shampoo probably more than actual shampoo, so this is really my area," says Clariss Rubenstein, hairstylist to Gemma Chan, Alison Brie and Mindy Kaling. She's a fan of Klorane's dry shampoo because "it soaks up all the oil with almost no residue. For a dry shampoo, leaving no residue is a big ask, and Klorane delivers."

Hairstylist David von Cannon, who works with Priyanka Chopra, Reese Witherspoon, Isla Fisher and Justin Theroux, calls this option his "go-to dry shampoo to leave hair fresh and with added volume."

Pro tip: "I like to spray the product directly onto a paddle brush and then brush through the hair, roots to ends. This will transform even the greasiest locks into a clean and refreshed look," explains Clayton Hawkins, hairstylist to Elizabeth Olsen, Dakota Johnson and Emma Roberts.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Batiste Dry Shampoo ($6.49; target.com)

"It is a great product and does exactly what you need a dry shampoo to do: gets rid of oil, and wakes your hair up with a little lift," says Rubenstein. Both she and von Cannon are fans of the different scents offered.

"Batiste is great because it works very well at refreshing a hairstyle and absorbing excess oil," von Cannon says. "It is accessible to almost anyone as it is a lower price point and can be found at most drug stores and mass-market retailers throughout the country."

_______________________________________________________________________________

Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo ($46; dermstore.com)

Von Cannon loves the scent of this dry shampoo and calls it "a great dry shampoo at a higher price point that leaves hair refreshed and smelling great all day." Kylee Heath, hairstylist to Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Rachel McAdams, notes: "The powder it sprays has great absorbency, it's easy to use and it gives the hair a little added texture, which is a bonus."

_______________________________________________________________________________

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo ($24; sephora.com)

"This dry shampoo soaks up the oil while leaving no white residue, so it is great for darker hair," says Heath. "I love the smell as well — not too strong, but fresh and perfect."

After you mist your hair, be sure to wait 30 seconds to let the product activate before you brush it out and style your hair. Miles Jeffries, hairstylist to Mariah Carey and Erika Jayne, is also a fan of this dry shampoo and says it works for all hair textures.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder ($28; sephora.com)

If you're not a fan of aerosol products, then consider Bumble and Bumble Prêt-à-Powder to revive your fine and oily hair. "Clients love this product because it's a three-in-one: volume, texture and dry shampoo," says Jeffries. Sprinkle a little bit on your roots like a salt shaker, let it soak in for a couple of minutes.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Psssst! Dry Shampoo ($6.99; ulta.com)

"This works just as well as some salon brands at a fraction of the price and is for people who can't live without dry shampoo," says Jeffries. He's also a fan of the cruelty-free formula, which contains cloudberry for smoothness and chia seeds to add shine and volume to the hair.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Kristin Ess Style Reviving Dry Shampoo ($14; target.com)

"This product smells amazing, and it really absorbs oils without leaving a chalky white residue," says Scott King, who works with Kate Beckinsale, Lisa Rinna and Ashlee Simpson Ross.

The cruelty-free formula has Zip-Up Technology, a proprietary blend that helps smooth the look of damaged strands and protects your dye job from fading.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo ($28; dermstore.com)

If your locks need some major volume, you're in luck. "This dry shampoo works well on the finest of hair and adds a lot of volume with no residue," explains King. Argilla clay powder helps to soak up excess oil and the blend of caraway, peppermint and basil oils gives it a mild scent.

_______________________________________________________________________________

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo ($27; sephora.com)

King is also a fan of the three dry shampoos from IGK, but we suggest First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo when you've gone a little too long without shampooing your hair or if you tend to sweat profusely. "It is heavy-duty and helps in between washes while absorbing oil and sweat and even has a cooling effect on the scalp," says King.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Sam McKnight Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo ($27.50; net-a-porter.com)

The product name says it all. On days when you're just too busy to go through your usual hair care routine, mist the Sam McKnight Lazy Girl Dry Shampoo about 10 inches away from your roots. Let it sit for about 60 seconds before styling. "This dry shampoo is great for blond hair but is also strong, making it great for greasy hair too," says Shukeel Murtaza, hairstylist for Ellie Goulding, Laura Haddock and Kehlani.

The 4 Best Shampoos For Frizzy Hair

If you prefer a smoother hairstyle, you know how frustrating it can be when your hair refuses to cooperate. Fortunately, the best shampoos for frizzy hair can help your stay sleek and shiny. Frizz — not to be confused with waves or curls — occurs when the little scales that make up the cuticle of the hair, or the outer layer, lift up instead of lying flat. This can be caused when hair is dry or damaged, or as a result of moisture in the air.

As the first step in a hair cleansing and styling routine, shampoo provides the foundation for achieving non-frizzy 'dos. When you're shopping for a frizz-reducing shampoo, look for ingredients that will help protect and moisturize your strands. Some products contain polymers that coat the cuticle, sealing in moisture while keeping out any external moisture (think: humidity) that might affect the texture of your hair.

If you struggle to keep your hair moisturized, look for shampoos that incorporate natural oils in their formulas that can penetrate, coat, and hydrate the cuticle. Argan, coconut, avocado, and marula oils are all commonly used as moisturizing ingredients in hair care. Finally, some products incorporate ingredients that can help repair damaged hair and make it smoother and less prone to frizz, such as hydrolyzed keratin or other hydrolyzed proteins.

You should avoid products with sulfates, which are a common ingredient in shampoos and can cause frizz by drying out your hair and stripping it of natural oils. For this reason, none of the shampoos on this list contain sulfates.

Whether you're on a budget or want to splurge on frizz-free hair, these four shampoos will leave your hair feeling nourished — and help you achieve that sleek, silky hair you've been chasing.

1. The Best Overall Shampoo To Fight Frizz

Living Proof No Frizz Shampoo (8 Oz.)

See On Amazon

This Living Proof No Frizz shampoo contains Living Proof's patented healthy hair molecule (OFPMA), which coats the cuticle to smooth out hair and protect it from humidity. The molecule also repels oil and dirt, which can help your hair look fresh for longer and, in turn, reduce the frequency with which you shampoo.

Reviewers who love this sulfate-free Living Proof shampoo report that it leaves hair feeling soft and shiny without weighing it down too much, and a little bit of product goes a long way.

Strictly gluten-free users might want to steer clear of this one, however, as it contains hydrolyzed wheat protein. This protein, like keratin, is able to bond to damaged hair in order to smooth and repair it.

Positive Amazon review: "I just can't replace this shampoo. It's a 10 in every single way. It does help with the frizz, it leaves your hair with an amazing texture and feel. It is a little pricey, but it is totally worth the money."

2. The Best Budget Anti-Frizz Shampoo

L'Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz-Defy Sulfate-Free Shampoo (8.5 Oz.)

See On Amazon

This L'Oréal Paris EverPure Frizz-Defy sulfate-free shampoo has marula oil, a lightweight, moisturizing, and antioxidant-rich ingredient, as well as amodimethicone, a silicone polymer that coats strands to lock in moisture and make the cuticle sit smoothly.

This shampoo is meant to last — according to L'Oréal Paris, it can fight frizz for up to 24 hours. With cleansing plus moisturizing properties and the ability to help your hair hold up in humidity, this shampoo is a great option for anyone on a budget.

Positive Amazon review: "This shampoo really does work well on controlling frizz, even in the Florida summer with all the humidity. [...] It lathers nicely and doesn't have an overpowering scent. My hair dries soft and easily, leaving it looking and staying frizz free."

3. The Best Super-Moisturizing Shampoo

Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo (8.5 Oz.)

See On Amazon

As you can probably guess from the name of the product, Moroccanoil's Moisture Repair shampoo depends on the benefits of oils — two different nutrient-rich oils, in fact! Avocado oil and argan oil both work to hydrate and protect the hair in this formula.

In addition to oils, this Moroccanoil shampoo has reconstructive keratin, which can help restore elasticity to the hair and smooth out strands.

Positive Amazon review: "The BEST shampoo I have ever used. My hair is very dry and tends to frizz, winter or summer! This shampoo leaves my hair feeling soft and makes it shiny in a good way. I'm happy I discovered it."

4. The Best Budget Shampoo For Dry Hair

OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo (25.4 Oz.)

See On Amazon

The sulfate-free OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk shampoo hydrates and strengthens hair with moisturizing coconut oil and coconut milk. One perhaps unexpected ingredient in this formula is egg white proteins — egg whites are considered to have nourishing and reparative effects on dry hair, just like keratin.

And with its subtle coconut scent, this shampoo will have you thinking of warm beaches, even when you're fighting winter hat hair.

Positive Amazon review: "Leaves my hair feeling healthy and strong! I also really like that my hair does not feel striped and brittle after shampooing. My hair is usually frizzy straight but now it has less frizz and is starting to form waves!"

Experts share their 7 tips for incredible hair (no matter what your texture)

From shampoos, to brushing, the experts tell us the tips that make every day hair care easier.

Regardless of texture, colour or style, there's one thing nearly everyone wants: hair that looks like it's been through the hands of a salon professional every week.

But if there simply isn't time in your ever-increasing list of things to do, and if you'd rather prefer that extra 20 minutes in bed over waiting for the keratin-rich hair mask to work its magic, read on, because we've spoken to leading experts in the beauty industry for their seven, yes, just seven key hair rules to stick to for the happiest, healthiest hair of your life.

Bye, bad hair days.

1) Rethink the way you wash your hair

Mintel reports that 33% of women who have changed their washing habits in the last 12 months cite worrying about damage as the top reason, so how often should you be shampooing?

Well, industry experts argue that less is more.

"Over-washing can be damaging for your hair, especially if it is bleached, coloured, has been chemically treated or is naturally very dry or porous," says Steve Rowbottom, co-director of Westrow. "When you wash your hair every day it strips away the natural oils and proteins that you need to keep your hair and scalp healthy, so try to limit hair washing to three times a week if you can."

But it does depend on your hair type.

The best shampoo for thick, coarse, curly hair

"The curlier your hair is, the longer you can go between washes," explains dermatologist Dr. Doris Day. If you have thick, coarse, curly hair, pick a shampoo that hydrates as it cleanses, like Percy & Reed's Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Wash Shampoo, £18. It's also sulfate free, so won't strip your colour.

The best shampoo for fine hair

"The finer and straighter your hair is, the faster the oil wicks down," says Steve, "so that can make it oilier faster. If you have super straight hair, you may not be able to go more than two days without washing." If you have fine, straight hair, pick a gentle shampoo like Bumble and Bumble's Gentle Shampoo, £20, which is super-kind on strands.

The best shampoo for coloured hair

If you colour your hair regularly then it's best to avoid washing your hair every day to keep your colour from fading and your strands from becoming parched. The same applied for just-dyed lengths.

"Leave your hair for at least 72 hours after a colour appointment before washing it again," says Kamila Pruszek, salon manager at award winning West London salon, Blue Tit. "It can take up to three days for the hair cuticle to fully close, trapping in the colour molecules. If you wash your hair before the cuticle has closed, you risk disrupting the freshly applied colour and your gorgeous new hue is likely to fade."

When you do eventually wash your hair, avoid shampoos that contain sulphates and silicones. Sulphates can strip the colour, while silicones leave behind residue that can leave your new colour looking dull. Stylist recommends Pureology's Hydrate Colour Care Shampoo, £18.50, which cleanses from root to tip without stripping your strands of colour and Moroccanoil's Hydrating Shampoo, £19.95, to eradicate build up and nourish porous lengths.

The best shampoo for African or Caribbean hair

Afro and Caribbean hair can get very dry because of its unique texture, which also makes it incredibly fragile. Most hairdressers comment that the issues they see with this type of hair are from a build-up of debris on the scalp and damage caused by detangling. KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo, £5.40, is specifically designed to put moisture and bonds back in your hair.

Remember, dry shampoo is your friend

"If you're prone to greasy hair, then use a little dry shampoo in between washes to soak up excess oil," advises Steve. "But try and avoid becoming too reliant on dry shampoo as it can cause build-up on the scalp and clog hair follicles, which can impede hair growth. If you really struggle to avoid frequent washing then remember that certain styles work better – and look better – on hair that isn't freshly washed. Braids, bedhead buns and twisted topknots are all great looks for those in-between wash days."

Shop the next-generation dry shampoos doing so much more than banishing oily roots.

2) Always use protection

Hair can be damaged by both UV and heated tools, like straighters, tongs and even your trusty hairdryer, so it's important to give your hair as much protection as possible.

"When you dry your hair at home always use a heat protector," says hairstylist Mark Woolley of Electric Hairdressing. Try the ghd Heat Protect Spray With UV Protection, £12.95, to condition from the inside out and shield against damage from straighteners and colour-zapping rays.

And when drying, be sure not to hold the hair dryer too close to your lengths, to prevent split, fluffy ends. "As a test, blow the hairdryer onto your hand and see how fast you pull away when holding it close to your skin."

3) Become a blow-dry pro

A good blow-dry should last at least a couple of days depending on your hair type, and there are several products that will help prolong the life of your style. You can also bypass hot tools by multitasking your hair style, as celebrity stylist Dan Sharp explains: "Styling doesn't always have to involve a hot tool. If you give yourself a fierce blowout on Monday, rock it out on Tuesday and on Wednesday do a fab high ponytail. Making your style last a few days will really help prevent damage."

The perfect at-home blow-out is not as tricky as it sounds and if you invest in a few good tools it'll make it even easier.

"Start by flipping your head upside down, and shake your hair around while you blow-dry," says hair care expert Harry Josh. "The more you move, the more volume you'll get. Once it's about 80 percent dry, flip back up and blow-dry hair in sections to smooth, focusing on polished ends. The last three inches are key: Move your brush and dryer right down to the very end of the strands and take your time. It will make all the difference. Most people come at their heads from the side, which makes hair frizzy and staticky by pushing it all over the place."

4) Remember the good tools rule

Think of your hair like your skin - what you put on it will affect it. Investing in good quality products and tools will keep hair looking and feeling healthy and strong.

"People are cheap with what they use on hair but wouldn't dream of treating their cashmere jumper in that way," says hair stylist and Redken Ambassador Tracy Cunningham.

"At home, you should have a round brush for blow-drying, a Mason Pearson brush for styling and a tail comb to move hair around a little," says hair legend and Redken Global Creative Director, Guido Palau.

Good brushes are worth investing in and although might have a heftier price tag than others, if they're looked after they will last forever. Keep your brushes clean and free of dead hair, oil and product build-up by washing them in a mixture of baking soda and warm water once a month.

Here's how to choose the right hairbrush, according to your hair type.

5) Condition the right way

Good conditioner is also crucial when it comes to any hair type but particularly thick, curly tresses.

"For curly, highly textured hair, always deep condition," says celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson. "No two minute conditioners here. Deep conditioning involves using a conditioner that will add moisture and strength (protein) back to hair. You should use heat by either applying conditioner to hair while taking a shower and let it sit while showering or by covering the hair with a plastic cap and applying heat from an outside like a hair dryer.

"I believe it's important to use leave-in conditioners and also not to shampoo so often. Rinse it if you want to but don't necessarily shampoo it."

To make sure your hair really absorbs the conditioner, towel-dry hair after shampooing. Excess water will mean the conditioner won't be able to penetrate the hair shaft and deliver the necessary moisture to keep hair looking healthy and shiny.  If you're short on time, at least squeeze out excess water.

Try:

TIGI S-Factor Serious Conditioner

Approved by some of the best hairstylists in the business, TIGI's conditioner banishes fluffy ends and frizzy bits, making thick, coarse and coloured hair so much more manageable.

£17.95, feelunique.com

Mazuri Shea Butter Fresh Start Conditioner

This natural conditioner harnesses shea butter and coconut oil to detangle, nourish and impart a glossy lustre. Our hair has never felt silkier.

£6.99, tesco.com

And where you apply it matters, too.

"Conditioner only needs to go on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair," says stylist Kerrie Urban. "Try not to put the conditioner on the roots as it will cause your scalp to get greasy faster."

It's also a good idea to think ahead and anticipate situations where your hair might dry out.

"While you exercise, you perspire, which means that your hair gets damp with sweat that can actually make it dry," says LA-based hair stylist, Andy LeCompte. "Before you hit the gym (especially during the summer, but this works year-round too) wet your hair and add in some conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends. Rinse out the conditioner post-workout and you'll be left with shiny, hydrated hair."

6) Ace your brushing technique

No-one wants a matted mess for a mane, so brushing is always necessary, but don't tear through your locks mindlessly. According to Guy, being too aggressive will only cause damage, and no-one wants to contend with fluffy, split ends.

"For perfectly shiny, healthy and untangled hair, you should be brushing your hair twice a day," suggests hairstylist Laura Superbi. "Once in the morning and once before going to bed, for about a minute each time."

So what's the best technique?

"Brushing from the roots causes damage – always brush from the bottom and work up," advises hair stylist Tracey Cunningham, especially if you have long hair.

And the tools you employ should change when your hair is wet to avoid snapping and static.

"When your hair is soaking wet, it is weaker, fragile and more susceptible to breakage," says hairstylist Nicky Clarke. Save your brush for when your hair is dry and invest in a wide-tooth comb. The teeth are designed to glide through wet hair - especially if coarse, wavy or curly - much easily than brush will, and there'll be much less damage to contend with when it's dry. Try the 3 More Inches by Michael Van Clarke Safety Comb, £17.50. Handmade from vulcanized rubber, it minimises snagging, so the hair cuticle remains smooth.

7) Beef up your haircare arsenal

If you have fine hair

People with fine hair need to be careful when it comes to anything containing an oil like argan, coconut, or olive. While incredibly hydrating these wonder ingredients can be too much for fine tresses. Too much and you'll add weight to the hair making it heavy, flat and limp. Aloe oil is a great alternative as it's far lighter and will nourish without leaving hair looking or feeling greasy.

Try: Philip Kingsley Maximiser

Volumizing styling spray for fine, limp and flyaway hair. Providing super body, and maximum volume. Holds the hair, whilst adding shine and smoothing frizz. For use on wet hair, but can also be used on dry hair as a setting lotion.

£23.50, philipkingsley.co.uk

If you have thick hair

Thicker hair needs more hydration than fine textured hair due to its wider diameter. It's worth investing in products that are moisture balancing to meet the needs of the drier ends and newer roots. If you find your hair is prone to frizzing, choose lightweight smoothing products that will tame and not weigh your style down. If your hair is wavy or curly, a heavier cream or serum may be needed.

Try: Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin 2 Shampoo

This hard-working shampoo gently cleanses hair without removing any moisture. It restores moisture, shine and also leaves a shield on the fibre's surface to protect it from drying out any further. Hair will be left soft, smooth and manageable.

£19.50, feelunique.com

If you have afro-hair

With its unique structure African-Caribbean hair is the most vulnerable to damage of all hair textures. It has specific processing, styling and grooming needs and needs products that are suited to it. Being curly this type tangles easily and a lot of breakage happens through pulling so it's important to take extra care. Always start at the ends and work up to your roots with a wide-tooth comb.

Try: Charlotte Mensah Manketti Hair Oil

If you have coarse or curly hair

Coarse, curly hair can often get dehydrated as it's harder for natural oils to travel down the shaft and coat the entire strand. Jojoba oil and Shea butter are perfect as they are similar to our own natural hair oils. This type of hair can be difficult to style if it's been over-washed and become frizzy but don't be tempted to reach for anything too silicone-heavy as it will dull your colour and end up causing even more frizz. A pre-shampoo treatment can work wonders on coarse hair giving ultimate shine and hydration.

Try: Leonor Greyl L'Huile De Pre-Shampoo Treatment

Apply to dry mid-lengths and ends and distribute with a comb, making sure all the strands are coated. Leave to work for five to 10 minutes (or overnight) and then shampoo out.

£30, spacenk.com

If you have damaged hair

Those with coloured hair should avoid shampoos containing sulphates and silicones as they will strip colour and leave behind a residue that will make your new colour look dull and flat.

Try: Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask

Give yourself and your hair a treat with this moisture-rich, protein-packed mask. Not only does it give life to sad hair instantly but it also infuses protein back into strands with its restorative formula rich in argan oil and shea butter to restore hair's elasticity and rebuild its strength from the inside out.

Super softening formulas to see off thirsty strands: These are the best shampoos for dry hair

It dawned on me, while standing behind the owner of a very swishy ponytail as I exited the tube, that I never really get excited by shampoo. If someone approaches with a cracking red lip, I'll swoop straight in for the shade. Ditto a fresh blusher or an enticing perfume. You name it, I want details. Shampoo? Mmm. Not so much.

This woman, though, she was doing something right. No dried-out strands, no peeling split ends, no frazzled flyaways. Just ultra glossy, beautiful-looking hair. Well done that woman. So, I tapped her up for details to pass the secret along (you're welcome). It was the Momo shampoo from Davines. Makes sense – they started off as a salon-only brand.

A carefully chosen conditioner is exactly the salvation post-summer hair needs

Now that we're deep in the middle of winter (with colder weather on the way), it's more important than ever to pick a shampoo (and conditioner) that works to undo the damage done by the elements (plunging temperatures, lashing wind, pollution, central heating etc) all of which can leave our hair coarse and dehydrated. In particular, it's worth looking out for extra nourishing ingredients that are rich in keratin (the protein behind healthy hair) like argan oil and almond oil as well as moisturising avocado oil and coconut milk.

    8. Best shampoo for greasy hair: Avalon Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo Apple cider vinegar is a real favourite for leaving hair clean and shiny

    9

Apple cider vinegar is a real favourite for leaving hair clean and shinyCredit: Holland & Barrett
  • Avalon Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo 325ml, £6.99 from Holland & Barrett - buy here
  • It's said that apple cider vinegar can help slow down oil production in the scalp, which is helpful for those with greasy manes.

This shampoo is vegan with natural ingredients including raw apple cider vinegar, nettle extract, argan oil and babassu oil, to help restore hair's natural pH levels and leave it shiny and smooth.

It's great for clearing scalps that are weighed down by greasy product build-up.

What is good for greasy hair?

Various ingredients can help deeply cleanse hair and eliminate grease - some experts even recommend looking in the kitchen cupboard.

For example, an apple cider vinegar rinse (ACV diluted with water) can be an effective home remedy to combat grease.

How do I stop my hair from getting greasy so quickly?

You can stop your hair from getting greasy by keeping your hands of it - literally.

Touching your hair often will transfer oils from your finger tips to your locks, so try avoiding it when possible.Same goes for brushing your hair too much.

This will only stimulate oil production, in turn making your hair look more greasy.

As hard as it may be too resist, especially if you're a regular at the gym, avoid over-washing your hair.

Daily washes can strip your scalp of its natural oils, which means it will then start producing more in an attempt to replace them.

Finally, be cautious with the conditioner. It should be applied on your ends only.

As a general rule of thumb, if you're running out of conditioner faster than shampoo, then you're doing it wrong.

Moroccanoil Curl Cream Defines My 3C/4A Hair Like Nothing Else: Review

TL;DR: A styling cream for wavy and curly hair that smooths, defines, and conditions waves and curls

It's hard to decide which part of my curly hair-care routine is most important. You can't have poppin' curls without a solid base, so shampoo, conditioners, and deep treatments are a must. But those three alone cannot guarantee that I'll have a head full of tight, defined coils that will fluff out further to the heavens as the days go by. That's why a curl-defining styler like Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream is so important to me — a good one can really make or break my hair-care routine for the week.

While I love the softness and frizz of third-day hair, I don't want all that on the first day. There are tons of brands that make products just for curls, but because curl patterns can vary, you can't just pick up any old definer and assume it will be right for your texture. If you have finer curls, thick creams might weigh them down. If you have kinky curls, some products just simply don't have the hold you need if you're trying to define your texture. As someone who is in the middle, with tight coils, kinks, and slightly looser curls all on the same head, the best definers for me have a "slim-thick" consistency. And by that I mean, you can tell they're creamy and moisturizing in your hand and when you apply it in your hair, but they're not so thick that they weigh down my curls or cause buildup.

    Courtesy of brand

You could classify Moroccanoil's Curl Defining cream as just that. The moment I pumped some of the product in my hand, I knew it was going to be smooth sailing from there. It definitely has some thickness, the kind that instantly clumps those wet or damp curls together. I had to be careful, actually, not to use a ton because I felt the product was so substantial. I raked this into my already co-washed hair, did minimal styling, and then let it air-dry as I made my way to work. When I got in the office, I rubbed some oil onto my hands and lightly scrunched and smoothed it into my strands. (I'm currently using this one a lot.) My hair was clumped like crazy (crazy good). The product is so moisturizing that it definitely caused me a fair share of shrinkage. So much so, that people asked me if I'd cut my hair (I did, but when it shrunk, it looked like I'd cut off a lot more than I actually had.)

For me, the real test of a curl cream is if it can keep your hair defined as the days go by, while also fluffing out to its former, voluminous glory. This one did just that. Three days later, and I've still got plenty of coils still intact amongst the fluffier, softer, slightly frizzy texture that comes as the days passed. It still looks good, in the kind of carefree, undone-but-still-finessed way I love.

As we know, Moroccanoil is a little bougie — one bottle of this stuff will set you back $34. But if you like nice things, love the Moroccanoil smell, or a little bit of both, there's a good chance you'll be into this.

Pro Tips for Getting Red Carpet Ready

The Oscar kudoscast marks the end of a long awards season and looking and feeling great on the red carpet is as big a piece of the equation as the fashion. Variety turned to some of Hollywood's most sought-after fitness and beauty gurus to ask how to create a flawless outer shell for the big night.

    Tracy Andersonfounder, Tracy Anderson Method

Anderson, who counts Gwyneth Paltrow and Tracee Ellis Ross among the her devotees, is not a fan of the pressure that surrounds talent during the award show frenzy. She is passionate that her clients "block out the noise." She cites Ross as her red carpet muse: "Tracee is magnetic on the carpet. Her spirit, ease and comfort with herself. It's more real and beautiful." However, Anderson does have a set list of tips that will aid the beautification program for the big day, including:

    • Work out in the morning. It promotes a great sleep that night, which is critical.• Have a productive day before the awards, not a day of pampering. Do "things that have meaning for you" and try not to get "hyper-focused on the event itself."• Don't start a new diet, such as a raw food diet, close to the awards.• Don't anticipate. It is bad for the brain to focus on the outcomes such as who will win? Will I make the best-dressed list?• Drink hot tea with honey all day.

Mila Moursifounder and head aesthetician, Mila Moursi Skin care

The celebrated skin guru behind stars including Jane Fonda, Charlize Theron and Sandra Bullock has a strong point of view when it comes to preparing the skin to be red carpet worthy. Awards show "prep begins one month ahead," she says. The first step is a recommended three- to four-day juice fast in combination with a lemon water cleanse in the mornings. Moursi is also a proponent of intermittent fasting — addressing the inside is "critical to the program." As for the outside, Moursi's system includes full body and face therapies with detoxing techniques through sweat-inducing treatments, scrubs and peels, and cell regeneration either manually or using machines such as radiofrequency. Moursi says, "The most important treatment for the face is manual sculpting work to improve circulation and is great for lymphatic drainage." The result is a "regenerated younger self," she says.

    Bryce Scarletthairstylist

Scarlett, the hairstylist behind Hailey Bieber and Kaia Gerber, says the process of designing a red-carpet look "starts at least a few weeks out, sometimes a few months if the gown is custom." After the stylist has shared the outfit sketch with the talent, Scarlett starts working with makeup to conceptualize the overall look and feel. "I personally have such a respect for the designers and stylists. I always want the hair to speak to the clothing and complement it; never outshine it or the woman wearing it." The day of the event begins with a quick "mockup" hair and makeup trial before the real deal ensues. "Jewelry is very important for me to see, especially earrings and necklaces as they add shape to the face and neck and can complement or compete with certain hairstyles." Scarlett uses the final moments to take full body pictures from different angles to get an idea how everything will photograph. "It's important to build a solid foundation for the hair so i t lasts and that means the right products," Scarlett says. He finishes every look with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray.

    Katey Dennomakeup artist

Denno counts stars including Naomi Watts, Margaret Qualley, Amber Heard, Judith Light, Felicity Jones and Beanie Feldstein as regulars. She says it's never a great idea to get too "married to an idea" because looks can change and so can the mood. "I had a client the other day tell me she was feeling bold, so I mixed up a really cool blue-red lip and it looked fantastic on her. Everyone in the room loved it, but when she went to the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror, she felt not daring enough to wear it, so we took it off and changed direction." To make makeup last throughout the night, Denno loves "Kjaer Weis translucent powder and RMS' powder. It preemptively soaks up any oils to help keep pigment in place. I also make sure to layer products. A cream blush is set with a powder blush and then sprayed with a fine mist of hydrating toner to bring back a little life to powdered skin. Lipstick is applied in layers and a tissue is kissed in between to remove e xcess oils," she says. The one product she can't live without for awards night: "An eyelash curler, of course, a good luminizer and the RMS [cream] luminizer or the Antonym luminizers."

    Rita Hazanhair colorist

Hazan, otherwise known as "the queen of color," is the owner of Rita Hazan Salon in New York. She is the master behind the hair color of Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Lopez. Hazan says that the color of her clients' hair has to work back to the entire vision for the look. On average, it takes Hazan anywhere from an hour to three to do a client's hair color for the awards. She sees up to three the week leading up to the Oscars. Hair care during the week of the show is important for Hazan, who recommends using her True Color Shampoo and Conditioner, Ultimate Shine Gloss and Weekly Remedy treatment. She has had some red carpet emergencies, citing the time she had to fix "botched brown hair that had turned orange without damage to make it look like it never happened."

Cassandra Greyfounder and chief brand officer,Violet Grey

Grey's luxury beauty brand Violet Grey is the ultimate in curation for die-hard beauty enthusiasts. Grey recognizes the value of handbag "real estate" and how "precious" it is at the Academy Awards. "My Violet Grey-approved clutch essentials include Jillian Dempsey's Cheek Tint in petal, which I love using on my lips, Victoria Beckham Beauty Satin Kajal Liner in black that I use to create and maintain a lived-in smoky eye, and Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat High Cover Radiant Concealer in 1.0 to fake eight hours of sleep."

I’m a Football Coach, and I Spend $13,410 a Year on My Beauty Routine

These days it's nearly impossible to know what women are spending on the way they look. Someone with Instagram-flawless contouring might have honed her craft using the finest from the drugstore aisles, and the utterly makeup-free type might be spending thousands on laser treatments and serums. En ter our series What It Costs to Be Me, in which we're asking interesting women for radical transparency.

Next up? Jen Welter, former pro football player and NFL coach, 42, from South Florida. Her grand total? $13,410

For some athletes, a pregame ritual includes a sweaty locker room, superstitions, and carb loading. For Jen Welter, the first woman to coach in the NFL (as a defensive coaching intern for the Arizona Cardinals) and founder of Gridiron Girls football camps, it involves a pedicure. "You need to get your mind right, so I would always study my plays and go get a pedi," she says.

Despite playing women's football for 15 years, then becoming the first female running back in a men's pro football league, Welter knows she's not the first thing that comes to mind w hen you hear "football player." And she likes it that way. "I decided that I would actually play the character of 'not looking like a football player' up. I started wearing makeup when I played and putting my hair in pigtail braids," says Welter. "I started to love that contradiction between what most people thought a football player looked like and actually being one of the best in the world."

For Welter, a key part of this look was her nails, so much so that she recently teamed up with Orly on a collaboration. A manicured hand also became part of her logo for her all-girl's football camps. "It became my signature," she says. But it doesn't stop there, Welter's routine is heavy on glam, from orange lipstick to regular facials, despite her hectic travel schedule. The one thing she saves on? Mascara. "I've used L'Oréal for years." Below, she breaks down her entire routine.

    My shower routine: $44

I've used Nexxus Humectress Conditioner ($30) on and off since high school. I absolutely love it. I also use the Therappe Shampoo ($14), and I find it really keeps my hair soft and silky. I used to be really picky about bodywash and lotion, but because I'm in a carry-on-luggage situation most days, I don't always get to make that choice—I can't even tell you how many of the bodywashes and lotions I have lost to TSA. So it's usually just wha tever is in the hotel. I don't use a razor because I got laser hair removal a while ago. It just makes everything so much simpler.

My hair appointments and extras: $4,026

I don't do a lot of styli ng, unless I'm at an event. But I do get Brazilian blowouts regularly—depending on my schedule about every four to six weeks (approximately $300). Most of the time I'm really low-maintenance and throw it in a ponytail. If you ever see it styled, I've had professional help—I love a blow-dry bar. If I do it myself, I love the Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo ($26); it smells so good. I spray it on at night if I'm going to be in a rush in the morning.

I color my hair about every four to six weeks as well (approximately $200), or whenever I'm in Boston or Dalla s, where I have friends who do my hair. They've done my hair for years, and they always have fun, different ideas to experiment with, and I know that they're going to do it the right way.

    My morning skin-care routine: $417

I love skin care, but I need to be coached. I have very good friends who tell me what to use. I literally follow the regimen they give me, and if they change it, then I change it. I love Rhonda Allison products because they're not artificial, there's no coloring, it's all essential oil and plant- derived. The Pumpkin Cleanser ($13), Stem Cell-C serum ($79), Growth Factor gel ($64), and Synergy A Retinol Cream ($125) are some of my absolute favorites.

I also love a gentle cleanser like Fresh's Soy Face Cleanser ($38) or the Korres Greek Yoghurt Foaming Cream Cleanser ($26), and then I'll use a little Mario Badescu Face mist ($12) and the Buffet ($14.80) and Hyaluronic Acid ($7) serums from the Ordinar y, and finish with the Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Cream ($39).

    Story continues

    My everyday makeup: $190

I'll do pops of color in my makeup because, being muscular, you can sometimes look a little tough, so I love bright lipstick and a little color around my eyes. I always want girls to see that you can be a football player and have your nails on point and love a good eye shadow; it's not an either-or.

I don't go anywhere without my It Cosmetics CC cream ($40), it doesn't matter if it's just day-to-day or I'm coaching. Since it has everything in one—coverage, color-correcting, SPF—it makes my life really easy. Sometimes I'll just add some lipstick and sunglasses, which I think makes you look like a million dollars, even if you've spent about five minutes. When I'm doing a little more, I use Tarte Shape Tape concealer ($27), and I'll set everything with Too Faced Born This Way Powder ($33) or RCMA No Color Setting Powder ($12). Then I'll use my Make Up for Ever Pro Sculpting Face Palette ($45), and finish with my favorite L'Oréal Paris Double Extend Mascara ($9). A great mascara helps everything, and this one is so good, but if I want something a little more expensive I'll use the Milk Makeup Kush Mascara ($24).

    My something extra makeup: $125

For a little color, I'll do a lipstick. I used to do reds, but I'm really into orange right now. Urban Decay Comfort Matte Vice Lipstick ($19) in Tilt is the perfect orange shade, and I love how matte it is. I just got this palette from Tarte ($49) that I love—it has a mix of golds and then some blue—I haven't been using anything else right now. Finally, the Urban Decay Eye Primer ($24) and Setting Spray ($33) saves me on a daily basis. They are the only things that keep my makeup from moving.

    My nighttime skin-care routine: $326

I have combination skin, and it's a little thicker, so it can handle a lot. I want my face to reflect the age that I feel inside, so I'm pretty big on looking youthful. I always take off my makeup with the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup Balm ($34), and then second-cleanse with one of my cleansers from the morning. Then I'll use either the Rhonda Allison Synergy A retinol cream ($125), Ole Henrikson Retin-Alt Sleeping Créme ($55), or Glow Recipe Watermelon & AHA Glow Sleeping mask ($44), befor e using the Fresh Black Tea Eye Cream ($68).

    My must-have treatments: $8,282

My mom always told me how important skin care is, so I started getting facials in seventh grade. I like to go see Rosa Alonso when I'm in Dallas, or Danielle Moser in Tucson. I alternate microneedling ($300) and microcurrent ($225) depending on how much downtime I have, and I'll do some kind of a peel every month ($189). I have thicker skin, which is great, because in a way it doesn't wrinkle as much, but you need to be refreshed. And thankfully, I learned that at a very young age, and I've been religious about that throughout the years. I also try to get regular facials (about $100) whenever I can, to help me relax and help with congestion.

Reflexology is something I have to do. I'm on my feet so much, and they're your foundation. If your feet are hurting, you're probably not going to be a nice person to be around. No matter where I am, I'll find a reflexology place, and just allow them to take my feet away. I go up to two times a week if I'm in pain, but never less than once a month. It's the best budget beauty treatment you can get (approximately $50).

And then, of course, my nails. I always have them done. Not only is it my thing, but it's also the first impression you make when you shake hands. I usually get gels every two weeks (about $35), but if I'm too hard on them, I'll get them done sooner.

My low-key fitness and wellness: $0

One of the best tips I like to give is that you have to put yourself on your list of things to do. I realized if I was going to be on the road—and giving my time and energy to a lot of different people in a schedule that wasn't consistent—then I needed to find a way to find time for myself. For me, that means, when I'm traveling, I'll go to the hotel gym and do some free wights and cardio, or I'll go for a walk. Now my workouts are focused on functional movements, maintenance, and balance. I don't have to tackle people anymore, so now what I really have to do is make sure that I feel good. Another thing I swear by is acupuncture. My sister is an acupuncturist, and I started seeing her, and I've absolutely seen the benefits. She's the only one I'll go to.
